Have you ever heard the saying, "There are two sides to the same coin?" It means that there are two ways of looking at the same thing, or two different interpretations of something that has occurred.
If you look at the coin to the right, you'll see that it is an 1861 $20 gold piece. What would you expect to find on the other side? Obviously, it would be the back of the selfsame gold piece. But, if this is what you expected, then you'd be wrong. Go on. Try it. Move your mouse over the picture and see if you're right. In fact, it is the back of a British £2 coin. Not what you expected, is it.
This is a perfect illustration of what goes on at work. Leaders go in one direction, and their followers go off in another. Employees attempt to show initiative, and managers see it as insubordination. And these are just the "nice" people.
How can employees manage difficult bosses? How can managers and employees deal with bullying at work? How can a group of people who are supposed to be working together repeatedly misunderstand one another? That's the theme of this newsletter.
Past issues have covered topics such as double standards, first impressions, and bullying at work..
