What problems do you have that you know about?
If you work in HR, then you already know that retaining talent is the most challenging problem you face. And, it’s getting worse.
I’m sure that you’ve been given a lot of different reasons why retaining talent is so difficult. I know I have. Everything from, “it’s the nature of the business” to “young people just don’t know what it means to work.”
But, would it surprise you if I said that these explanations were just excuses? Would you like to know what the real reasons are? Would you be interested if I could make retaining talent in your organization easy?
You would? Great! There are two of them, and here they are:
1) Your organization is not designed to hold onto people; and
2) Your managers behave in ways that tell your people that they should leave
That’s it. Fix those two things, and you’ll have no problem retaining talent.
Fundamentally, retaining talent is about giving people reasons to stay; but internal policies and procedures, as well as traditional management styles, actually drive people away. The reason that this problem keeps happening to you is because the ones who are blamed when things go wrong are the same people that you say you want to hold onto.
As the economy improves, it will become increasingly difficult for companies to succeed in retaining talent simply because these people will only want to work for those who demonstrate that they want them to stay.
And if you think that more money is the answer, then you’ll continue to bleed people. In fact, replacing those you lose will also be much harder, or even impossible. There just aren’t enough of them to go around.
Have you thought about that? What strategies for success do you have in place for achieving your objectives with the people you have? What would you do if your most talented people left? How would this affect your bottom line?
